Leathergoods sales drive SA retail growth
South Africa's retail trade sales rose 6.8% in March compared with figures for March 2011, according to Statistics SA.
The highest year-on-year growth rates were recorded for retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leathergoods (12%); household furniture, appliances and equipment (11.3%); and ‘other' retailers (9.8%).
The largest contributors to the 5.9% increase during the first quarter were ‘general’ dealers (5.9%); 'other' retailers (8.3%); and textiles, clothing, footwear and leathergoods retailers (5.4%).
