Australian beef industry to concentrate on Asia for growth

14/05/2012
Dr Peter Barnard, general manager for international markets and economic services at Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), has told an industry conference in Rockhampton that beef producers across the country can expect “mind boggling” growth in Asian markets owing to continued population and economic growth there.

“Food consumption in Asia is expected to double by 2020,” Dr Barnard said at the Beef Australia 2012 conference. “The outlook for the Australian beef industry is for a more diversified set of export destinations, but growth will be concentrated in Asia.”

Five years ago, 87% of Australia’s beef exports went to three destinations, the US, Japan and Korea. In 2011 those three countries accounted for 70% of Australian exports, as new markets emerged in Russia, the Middle East and China.
