Output from Chinese tanneries up 25% in Q1 value

New figures from the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) suggest that the value of the output from China’s tanneries grew by 25.7% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2011.

CLIA put the value of the leather produced by the country’s big tanneries (small operations do not feature in the report) at $5.6 billion for the quarter.

The rate of growth is down compared to last year, however, but almost 5%.

Hebei Province contributed most value to the tanning sector’s output, the organisation said.

In volume, tanneries produced 150 million square-metres of finished leather over the three-month period, an increased of 7.4% on a year ago, but with the growth rate, again, slowing compared to 2011. Hebei also topped the list in terms of volume of its output.
