Good news for sheepskin tanners as Australian meat exports surge in April

03/05/2012
Australian sheepmeat exports tracked well ahead of 2011 figures during the month of April, the country’s department of agriculture, fisheries and forestry has said, with lamb exports up 14% year-on-year, to 14,219 tonnes, and mutton exports 33% higher, at 6,607 tonnes. At the same time available supplies of lamb and sheep are much higher in 2012, especially across Australia’s eastern states.

Meat and Livestock Australia has commented that the highest levels of support for Australian mutton and lamb has come from the Middle East; lamb exports to that part of the world doubled in April 2012 compared to the same month in 2011 and mutton exports were 38% higher as meat importers moved to ensure stocks are in place for Ramadan, which this year begins in July.

Shipments to Greater China were also higher during April, with lamb up 1% on last year, to 2,499 tonnes, and mutton exports increasing by 157%, to 770 tonnes.

Lamb exports to established markets, such as the US and the European Union were down, by 22% and 4% respectively. Meat and Livestock Australia said this was mainly because stocks in those markets were high and competition from New Zealand was intense.
