Algeria represents an opportunity for Brazilian beef

Executive director, Fernando Sampaio, came back saying there was scope for strong growth in exports of Brazilian beef to the host country in the months leading up to Ramadan, which in 2012 starts in July. He said the biggest challenge for Brazilian beef in markets such as Algeria was the price-comparison that meat buyers there make with meat from India.
“The quality of that meat is noticeably inferior to ours,” Mr Sampaio insisted, “but the difference in price can be as much as $2,000 per tonne. And to make matters worse, the import tax on Braizlian beef can be as high as 52% of the price importers have to pay. Nevertheless, we are signing contracts with importers who want to supply multinational organisations in Algeria, many of whom insist that the beef, for example from overseas workers in the petrochemical industry, must be Brazilian.”
