Bangladesh leather exports up 17.5%

Bangladesh’s leather exports have shown tremendous growth of 17.5% in first nine months of FY 2011-12 (July-March).

 

According to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Bangladesh's total leather sector exports rose by 17.5% to $556.9 million in July-March 2011-12 from $474 million in the same period last year.

 

The breakdown showed that Bangladesh exported finished leather worth $236.83 million in FY2011-12 against $210.3 million in July-March2010-11 – showing a growth of 12.6%. Similarly, footwear exports went up by 17.6% to $260.9 million and leather bags and purses 41.5% to $59.3 million from $221.9 million and $41.9 million respectively in the same period last year.

 

Bangladesh has fixed an export target of $792.3 million for leather sector for 2011-12 (July-June) compared to $651.1 million in FY 2010-11. It includes $327.6 million for leather, $387.1 million for footwear and $77.6 million for leathegoods.
