Fire at Santa Croce tannery

02/05/2012
Fire broke out at a tannery in the Santa Croce sull’ Arno cluster in Tuscany on May 1. The authorities in Santa Croce traced the source of the blaze to a storeroom containing scraps in the Gabbiano tannery there.

Firefighters spent more than two hours at the site putting the fire out after passers-by alerted them at around five o’clock in the evening. May 1 is a public holiday in Italy.

The authorities said that the scrap leather was in a separate storage facility, alongside card and wood, and that the main tannery building had come through the incident undamaged.

Like many tanneries in Santa Croce, Il Gabbiano specialises in vegetable-tanned leather for high-end bags and other leathergoods.
