USMEF responds to partial import ban in Indonesia

01/05/2012
The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has said that nearly one week after confirmation of a new BSE case in California, a partial import ban by Indonesia remains the only official change in market access for US beef. The Indonesian market remains open to imports of boneless beef cuts from the US, but has closed to beef variety meat, bone-in muscle cuts and other beef products. Thailand has not officially informed the US government of a ban on US beef imports, but has publicly announced that trade may be suspended, the organisation said.

In a follow-up statement, USMEF said later that it had confirmation that Thailand does not plan to close to US beef. Market access in Thailand is limited to boneless beef cuts from animals under 30 months of age, and it now expects no change in this status.

USMEF chief executive, Philip Seng, has said that while the reaction from Indonesia
is disappointing, it is mainly because of “Indonesia’s desire to bolster its own domestic beef production rather than actual concerns about BSE.”

Mr Seng added that the vast majority of US trading partners have followed sound science and handled news of the BSE case “responsibly”. He said USMEF staff members have been actively engaged with industry partners and media in key markets in an effort to maintain consumer confidence and protect the market share of US beef.
