Pakistan leather exports fall

Reports from Pakistan suggest that the value of leather sector exports fell overall by 11.6 % to $71.9 million during the month of March 2012 compared to the previous month, February 2012. The decline in export values compared to the same month in 2011 was substantially steeper at 28.9%.

However, the value of finished leather exports was up, by 13.8% compared to February this year.

In March 2012 Pakistani tanners achieved export revenues of $29.7 million for finished leather and of $6.3 million for leather footwear. This represents a fall of 50.4% for footwear compared to February 2012.

Total leather sector exports for the first nine months of the current financial year (July 2011 – March 2012) were 3.2% down compared to the same months in the previous financial year.

Volumes were also down in the nine-month comparison. For the current financial year, tanners exported 17.2 million square-metres of leather, compared to 20.2 million during the corresponding three quarters of the previous financial year, 14.8% less.

Over the same period, Pakistan exported 8.8 million pairs of shoes in this financial year, compared to 9.1 million for the same months a year ago, a decline of 3.3%.
