India: leather exports on the rise

The Indian Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has announced that during the first nine months of 2011 (April - Dec) of the current financial year, the country’s exports of leather and leathergoods have registered a positive growth. Exports of different categories of leathergoods also recorded positive export growth.

The export of leather and leathergoods for the first nine months of 2011 touched $3.6 billion, as against $2.8 billion in the corresponding period the previous year, registering a positive growth of 31.1%.

The major markets for Indian leathergoods are Germany with a share of 15.2%, Italy 11.3%, UK 11.2%, US 9%, Hong Kong 7.5%, France 6%, Spain 6.1%, Netherlands 4.2%, Belgium 2.3%, U.A.E. 2.2%, Australia 1.3%. These 11 countries together account for nearly 76.2% of India's total leathergoods exports.

The breakdown of data showed that India exported finished leather worth $776.7 million, leather footwear worth $1.2 billion, footwear components $222.8 million, leather garments $442.7 million, leathergoods $805.4 million, saddlery and harness $82.1 million and non-leather footwear $53 million.
