PrimeAsia China retains gold status

20/04/2012
Tanning group PrimeAsia has announced that its tannery in Dongguan in China’s Guangdong Province has repeated its gold status in the most recent audit by the Leather Working Group, multi-stakeholder group that assesses the environmental performance of tanneries and awards gold, silver and bronze status to those achieving the best results. This is the third time PrimeAsia China has achieved gold in an LWG audit.

During the audit, PrimeAsia China also received the highest traceability rating, grade A, meaning that more than 90% of hides bought by the tannery are physically marked and traceable to the slaughterhouse. Gold and grade A traceability are the highest standings that can be awarded following an LWG environmental audit.

Between PrimeAsia China’s 2010 and 2012 LWG audits its energy usage decreased by 6.6%, solvent usage decreased by 41%, and fresh water usage decreased by 21.1% per square metre of leather manufactured. “The LWG protocol continues to raise the requirements to attain gold, and thus, it is a major achievement to attain a LWG gold standing,” the company said on announcing its success. “PrimeAsia China strives to uphold our progressive environmental goals and further advance global environmental stewardship.”
