Abiec president optimistic about beef exports

This target represents an increase of 20% compared to the export performance of the Brazilian beef sector in 2011 in terms of value and an increase in volume of around 10%. Abiec president, Antônio Jorge Camardelli, said recently that a slight fall in export values (0.53%) in the first quarter hadn’t diminished his confidence. “I’m very optimistic,” he insisted.
Mr Camardelli said there were three main pillars supporting the platform on which Brazil is building its meat exports, exchange rates, the general market situation and meat supply. He offered the opinion that all three were improving. He pointed out that exporters who experienced an exchange rate of 1.68 reais to the dollar last year are now receiving around 1.83 reais.
He also pointed out that if demand for beef is decreasing in many parts of Europe, domestic supply of beef in those markets is moving in the same direction, leading to less help from governments for competitor domestic suppliers. Brazil’s supply of beef remains strong, he added, with a monthly slaughter still at levels of aound 1.8 million head.
