Tax incentive for tanners in Mato Grosso

12/04/2012
The authorities in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso have announced a potentially important incentive to tanners operating there. The finance department of the sate government has said it will waive a tax called ICMS (which relates to the movement of goods) on hides from Mato Grosso abattoirs if they go for processing to tanneries within the state's boundaries.

To qualify for the tax relief, tanners and packer firms have to sign up with the state authorities to confirm that they are operating there. If tanneries later ship finished leather or wet blue out of Mato Grosso, they will have to collect the ICMS tax from their buyers and pass the money on to the Mato Gross government.
