Smallest UK cattle herd in seven years

11/04/2012
According to beef industry reports, the size of the cattle herd in the UK was at its smallest in seven years at the end of 2011.

Between December 2010 and December 2011, there was a decline of 2.2% in the country’s cattle population to 9.7 million head. This is the lowest end-of-year figure since 2005.

Industry sources have said the fall in cattle numbers is because of high production costs, particularly in relation to animal feed, but also to a decline in domestic sales of beef.
