Leather chemicals manufacturer expands

UK-based manufacturer of chemicals for leather finishing Yorchem has acquired new production, warehousing and office facilities on the same site as its existing factory in Eaglescliffe in the north-east of England.

Sales director, Julian Osgood, explained that the expansion had come after steadily increasing sales in the last few years. “At the start of the recession our sales were flat for a few months, but did not drop. Since then they have constantly gone upwards,” he said. “The number-one priority for the company is growth and we have invested heavily in new production equipment to satisfy demand.”

It was becoming apparent to the company that if growth continued at the same rate it would soon need to find a new location. Changing a busy chemical plant’s location is an extremely costly and time-consuming procedure. Large reactors, pipework and production vessels need to be taken apart, transported and reassembled. “Inevitably there would be problems with production and stock controls and customer service could easily suffer during the transition period,” Mr Osgood added. “When the opportunity to purchase the buildings adjacent to the factory arose, it was something Yorchem could not refuse. The new buildings amount to increasing our site by three times. We intend to transfer our raw material and finished stock warehousing next door to the new factory, allowing us to double our production area at our existing site.”

The expansion will also include new offices, application, research and development and quality control laboratories, and purpose-built container-loading docks. On announcing the development, managing director, Darren Strafford, said: “This investment demonstrates the commitment and confidence that Yorchem has in the leather industry. It shows that we intend to grow our business and continue to deliver quality products and excellent service at sensible prices.”
