BASF supports Tannery of the Year

The new Tannery of the Year Awards programme will commence in May 2012 with nominations and end with a gala dinner in Hong Kong in March 2013.
“The Awards recognise the top tanneries in the world and motivate the value chain of the leather industry to continuously innovate to build a sustainable future. BASF is honoured to play a key role in shaping the industry and steer its growth and sustainable development to the next level,” said François Desné, senior vice-president of leather and textile chemicals for BASF in south-east Asia.
Tannery of the Year is an awards programme for the global tanning industry, launched in 2009 to celebrate the production of leather and to help promote the material’s use throughout the world in footwear, furniture, car and aeroplane interiors, handbags and other accessories, gloves and other applications.
With the focus on corporate social responsibility, the Tannery of the Year programme identifies the two best tanneries in China, the rest of Asia, the Americas, Africa and Europe. Six principles underpin the competition: commitment to innovation, to environmental best practice, to workers, to the communities with which companies share resources, to strong relationships with suppliers and customers, and to financial sustainability.
The idea has already won the backing of APLF, an industry exhibition held annually in Hong Kong, chemical supplier Buckman, the International Council of Tanners, the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies and Washington DC-based campaign body Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production.
The idea behind the Tannery of the Year programme came from World Trades Publishing, which publishes leather industry trade magazine World Leather. World Trades chief executive, Simon Yarwood, said: “We are delighted that BASF, an established player in the leather chemicals value chain, has become a partner to the programme. The commitment and support that BASF has given to the 2013 Tannery of the Year awards is recognition of the continued importance of this programme. It has seen huge success in promoting the tanning industry and its commitment to corporate social responsibility for the past three years.”
