All tanneries must close down and leave the city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province in south-western China by 2015, the city's mayor has said.

The China Leather Industry Association has reported comments in which Chendu's mayor, Ge Honglin, said the city's economy must grow without industries that are deemed to be polluting. This included leather production as well as the manufacture of paper, dyeing and printing.
