Fire at Arzignano tannery
03/04/2012
Local reports say a cloud of thick, black smoke could be seen from many kilometres away. Firefighters from Arzignano as well as from provincial capital Vicenza and from several local towns were called to the tannery just after eight o’clock in the morning and spent the entire day at the scene, working to put the fire out and to prevent chemical supplies from becoming affected. An area used to store finished leather was the main area affected.
One worker was taken to hospital although his injuries were not deemed serious.
Cadore produced leather for furniture and automotive upholstery, as well as for footwear and leathergoods, at the facility, which covered 4,000 square-metres. Owner, Silvio Sartori, and members of his family are reported to have attempted to save finished hides from the fire, but were prevented from doing so by the ferocity of the blaze.
