Brazil brings 2.5% fewer hides into leather pipeline in 2011

Brazil’s National Statistics Institute, IBGE, has confirmed that the country’s cattle slaughter for the full year last year was 28.8 million, a 1.6% drop compared to 2010.

Beef industry leaders in Brazil have said a decline in exports to Europe and the high price of beef on the domestic market in 2011, leading to consumers eating more pork and poultry instead, were the main reasons.

Across the country, 34.1 million Brazilian cattle hides came into the leather supply chain during 2011 (including hides that had been in storage following slaughter in 2010 and hides that reached tanneries from abattoirs outwith the official network). This represents a drop of 2.5% compared to the year before.
