Beef production will increase in New Zealand

New Zealand’s beef production will increase by 6.5% in 2012, according to industry sources there. Good pasture conditions in the final months of 2011 led to many farmers delaying slaughter and to an increase in weight when cattle did reach the abattoirs.

The most recent government statistics consistently put the country’s beef cattle herd at between four million and 4.5 million, while dairy cattle numbers are higher, at around 5.5 million. Reports say the total herd size could grow by between 80,000 and 90,000 head this year, but mostly in the dairy sector.
