Uruguay: slaughter levels will be lowest since 2003

27/03/2012
New statistics from Uruguay suggest the slaughter figures for 2012 will be the country’s lowest since 2003, reaching an estimated 1.9 million head. This would represent a decline of 100,000 head compared to last year.

Actual figures show that in the period up to March 17, abattoirs in Uruguay had slaughtered 414,000 head of cattle, 5% down on the same period in 2011.

Industry commentators have said that livestock farmers in Uruguay are in the process of building up herd-sizes, which is one of the main factors for low slaughter levels. Farmers are taking these measures in response to recent high cattle prices.

Uruguay had the highest per capita consumption of beef in the world in 2011 at an average of 60 kilos per person. However, it still exports 77% of its total beef production, with Russia and the European Union currently the biggest buyers of Uruguayan beef.
