Pakistan tanners worry about raw material stocks and prices

The Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA) has voiced concern about reports that the government may reverse a decision to ban exports of live animals from the country.

In a statement, the PTA chairman, SM Naseem, said hides and skins are already scarce in Pakistan and prices at historical highs. He said this, in turn, had pushed production costs to levels at which Pakistani tanners are finding it difficult to win orders from customers in export markets.

As a result, he claimed production levels in the country’s tanneries are in decline, in spite of efforts to bring in raw material from other sources, especially African countries.
