USDA says beef production has grown by 13% in 20 years

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has said in a new report that the US produced more than 12 million tonnes of beef in 2011, an increase of 14.4% compared to the figures the agency has for 1991.

Over the same 20-year period, USDA calculates Brazil’s beef production to have risen from 5.5 million tonnes in 1991 to just over 9 million tonnes last year. The US and Brazil were, respectively, the biggest and second-biggest producers of beef globally last year, with shares of the global total of 21.2% for the US and 15.9% for Brazil.

Globally, packers produced 56.8 million tonnes of beef last year, a rise of 13% on the figure for 1991. The EU was the third biggest producer with over 8 million tonnes and a share of 14.2%, while China was next with 9.8% of the total, India with 5.4%, Argentina with 4.4% and Australian with 3.8% of the world total.
