Zambia: $20m allocated to livestock sector

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has earmarked $20 million to support Zambia’s livestock sector through infrastructure development. The bank is working in collaboration with the World Bank and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to support the livestock sector through infrastructure development.

AfDB country representative Freddie Kwesiga said the livestock sector is one of the growing sectors in the country which lacks adequate infrastructure development. Dr Kwesiga told media the project would include construction of deep tanks for livestock disease control and a one-stop shop to facilitate livestock services.
He said the number of livestock service centres to be established will be determined by the appraisal which will indicate details of the design and how the bank will fund the project.

“The bank is in the process of carrying out an environmental impact assessment and we hope to have an appraisal mission which will include all the design details and how the bank will fund the project,” he said.

The project will also include upgrading existing abattoirs by providing hygienic environments for animal slaughtering. “Our contribution will go towards the improvements of abattoirs which will require electricity for refrigeration so that beef does not go bad. The facilities will also provide an opportunity for livestock producers to sell drugs meant for disease control,” he said.
