Kenya's livestock ministry has said it will build new abattoirs close to the country's international airports to give overseas buyers of Kenyan meat easier access to the product.

According to the ministry, interest in the idea is particularly strong among importers in the Middle East, particularly in the United Arab Emirates. The United Arab Emirates is Kenya's biggest market for beef exports.

Livestock minister Mohammed Kuti told a radio station in Nairobi in February that the government would invite overseas investors to help it build new tanneries as well as abattoirs.
