The finance minister for the German state of Hesse, Dr Thomas Schäfer, has presided over an official ceremony to lay the foundation stone for a new innovation centre that specialty chemicals manufacturer Clariant is building at the Höchst industrial park in Frankfurt.

Around 500 researchers will work at the site when it is complete. It will cover around 35,000 square-metres.

“Innovation is the foundation of the future, both for individual companies and society as a whole,” said Christian Kohlpaintner, Clariant board member with responsibility for research and development. “We want to develop products and procedures that yield sustainable benefits and represent true progress.”

Dr Schäfer said that, in embarking on the new project, Clariant showed "the courage, determination and willingness to shape the future".
