Paraguay: empty abattoirs as FMD takes its toll

17/02/2012
The president of Paraguay’s meat industry association (CPC), Luis Pettengill, has complained that many of the country’s abattoirs are lying idle because cattle are not coming for slaughter.

Paraguay, which suffered an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in September 2011, is in the middle of a new vaccination campaign against the disease and Mr Pettengill has told local media that a delay in publishing new guidelines governing the movement of cattle is making it difficult for livestock farmers to take cattle for slaughter.

National animal health service service Senacsa has confirmed that Paraguay’s beef exports for January 2012 were 10,000 tonnes, a decline of 44% compared to the figure for January 2011.
