India’s leather exports are likely to register a growth of 13% and reach $5.4 billion by 2014 from the current level of $3.8 billion, according to a study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham).

The Indian leather industry currently employs over 3 million workers, but the Assocham study says that with a strategy in place, the number of potential employees could rise by another 3 million in the next five years.

India has a 3.5% share in the global leather trade. The major markets for Indian leather products are Germany with a share of 14.3% followed by the UK (12.8%) and Italy (11.5%).
