Jobs decline in Colombian tanneries

14/02/2012
Footwear and leathergoods manufacturers in Colombia have complained that continued exports of raw hides and skins from the South America country are hurting their businesses by provoking a lack of raw materials in the domestic market.

President of Colombia’s leather, footwear and leathergoods industry association, Acicam, Luis Gustavo Flórez, has warned that the tanning sector is at the greatest risk of job losses as a result. He said recently that between January and November 2011 the number of people employed in leather production in Colombia fell by 8%, while employment in footwear manufacturing went up by 10.6% and leathergoods production experienced employment growth of 8.4%.

“No tanneries have closed yet,” Mr Flórez said, “but production levels are under capacity. Tannery owners have invested in new technology and machinery, but sales of raw hides and skins to tanners outside the country is affecting them.”

Output from Colombia’s tanneries fell by 3.7% over the 11-month period, the most recent for which figures are available, and sales of leather by 1.1%.
