Longchamp trains its own people

13/02/2012
Luxury leathergoods brand Longchamp has said it is having difficulty recruiting enough skilled craftspeople to work at its handbag factory in Château-Gontier in the west of France.

One of six production sites that the brand runs in France, the director of the Château-Gontier factory, Jacques Ducher, has told local media that it is producing around 800 high-end handbags per week and that the 90 workers at the facility are struggling to keep up with growth in demand. He said Longchamp’s turnover went up by 21% in 2011.

As a result, Mr Ducher has been trying to recruit extra craftspeople but has said that finding people with the right skills has proved difficult. So, towards the end of last year, the company recruited nine women from the local area and committed to giving them in-depth training in leather craftsmanship. The period of training will end in July.
