“As a consequence,” AAQTIC has said, “hides are in short supply and the prices tanners were forced to pay for raw material reached record levels in the early months of 2011. However, from the mid-point of the year onwards, prices became stable, although still at historically high levels of around $1.15 per kilo.”
According to the organisation, the packer industry in Argentina is inspecting the kill this year to go above 11 million head again and the government has a plan in place to take slaughter levels to 15 million head by 2020.
Nevertheless, per capita consumption of beef in 2011 was 54.5 kilos, the lowest level in Argentina for 90 years.
The country’s herd size in 2011 was 48 million head of cattle, down 4% compared to 2010, but 20% less than in 2008. Since 2008, Argentina’s herd size has fallen by 12 million head.
