Bangladesh: footwear and leathergoods orders decrease

13/02/2012
Overseas buy-orders for Bangladesh's footwear and leathergoods have decreased significantly in the last few months as economic turmoil in the Eurozone takes its toll on the country's exports, leathergoods makers told the Financial Express.

The executives of leathergoods manufacturing plants told the newspaper that orders from retailers in Japan, a leading market for Bangladesh's footwear, have also declined in the recent months. They said it would be hardly possible to achieve the export target this year by the affected factories.

The monthly data of December 2011 showed that the country's total leathergoods export growth was 3.9%; 11.2% less than the target set for the month.

Domestic leather and leathergoods exporters fetched over $651 million in the 2010-11 fiscal year.
