Australian packers achieve export growth, despite US and Japan
10/02/2012
This represents the biggest total for three years and the fourth biggest in Australia's history (2008 was the record year so far with returns of $5.37 billion for Australian packer firms).
In 2011, however, Australian beef exports suffered a decline of 4% in each of its two biggest markets, Japan and the US. The US lost its second-place status to South Korea. Revenues from exports to Japan in 2011 were $1.78 billion, while shipments of beef to the US brought in $801.4 million. The total for South Korea was $834.8 million, a rise of 22% compared to 2010.
Packers blamed the declines in Japan and the US on the high value of the Australian dollar.
