Argentina: cattle industry could lose another 7,000 jobs this year

07/02/2012
The president of Argentina’s meat industry association, Miguel Schiariti, has said that the government there has confirmed that the sector lost 7,000 jobs in 2011 and stands to lose the same number again in 2012.

He explained that the industry had not recovered from losing 10 million head of cattle during a severe drought in 2008 and 2009 and that the herd size today (at its lowest for decades at around 48 million head), may still be seven years from recovering previous levels.

Slaughter, beef consumption and leather production have all fallen in volume as a result.
