India: two million new skilled workers by 2010

India’s leather industry has said it is confident a new sector-specific training organisation, part of a wider National Skills Development Council, can bring two million new skilled workers into the industry by 2020.

The National Skills Development Council has been set up because India has a shortage of skilled labour across the board. The leather sector believes its training programme will help it increase production capacity by enough to meet
a government-imposed target of achieving $14 billion in export revenues by 2017.
