Fatal tannery accident in Brazil

02/02/2012
The authorities in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul have imposed a fine of one million reals, equivalent to about $580 million, on a tannery run there by Marfrig.

An accident occurred at the start of February at Marfrig’s Bataguassu tannery. The authorities said the spillage of a chemical product at the tannery was the cause of four deaths among the workers and of injuries to 20 others.

Marfrig issued a statement saying it was intent on helping its employees and their families as much as possible, while collaborating fully with the authorities.
