Brazil releases full leather export figures for 2011

The Brazilian Tanners' Association (CICB) has released figures for the country's full-year leather exports for 2011.

In terms of value, $2.05 billion for the twelve months of 2011, there was a 17% increase compared to 2010.

Volume for 2011 was 26.7 million, 2% down on the 2010 volume.

CICB president, Wolfgang Goerlich, said on announcing the figures that he views the outlook for the Brazilian tanning industry in 2012 as "difficult". He explained that the global economic situation was likely to have an impact on leather exports from the South American country and that the domestic market was unlikely to be able to take up the slack.

"The domestic market is saturated," he said, "and is already facing the challenge of more and more synthetic substitutes going into finished products such as shoes for price reasons."
