Bangladesh: leather exports up 27.8%

Bangladesh’s total leather exports increased by 47.5% in the first six months of FY 2011-12 (July-December), according to the country’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). Leather exports increased to $382.2 million in July-December 2011-12 from $299.1 million in the same period the previous year.

 

The breakdown showed that Bangladesh exported finished leather worth $155.2 million in FY 2011-12 against $128.7 million in July-December 2010-11, showing a growth of 20.6%. Similarly, footwear exports increased by 32.1% to $191.62 million and leather bags and purses 39.7% to $35.4 million from $145 million to $25.3 million respectively in the same period last year.

 

It may be mentioned here that the Bangladesh has fixed an export target of $792.3 million for the leather sector for 2011-12 (July-June) compared to $651.1 million in FY 2010-11.
