The Indian leather industry is growing steadily, as shown by the number of new leather sector companies which are joining the Indian Council for Leather Exports (CLE). The CLE saw a growth of about 10% to 2,658 members in 2011, from 2,419 in 2010.

According to the CLE, 90 new members were registered in the South region, 103 in the North region, 23 in the East region and 27 in the Central region. On a negative note, four members left the West region in 2011.

The CLE was set up in July 1984as an autonomous non-profit company registered under the Indian Companies Act, 1956 entrusted with export promotion activities and the development of the Indian leather industry.
