Rising labour and materials costs hit leather apparel manufacturers

10/01/2012
Chinese leather apparel manufacturers have reported an increase in export revenues from sales in overseas markets in 2011, but a decrease in profits owing to rising raw material and labour costs.

Manufacturers have told local media that the price of high-quality tanned sheepskin went up in 2011 to $4.75 per square-foot from $3.80 per square-foot the year before. Apparel manufacturers also complained they had to pay 50% more for bovine leather last year compared to 2010.

At the same time, they said salary levels among their workers rose by 25% in the course of 2011.
