Argentina: Curtarsa tannery open again after a year
04/01/2012
Production ceased at the facility in January 2011, but on January 3, 2012, a dozen workers entered the premises with the purpose of preparing the machines to tan leather again.
Within 20 days, the owner of the tannery expects tanning to recommence. Workers were told last year that lay-offs would be temporary and the company reached an agreement to keep paying employees 60% of their salaries. Reports from Jáuregui say that even the lower level of salary has not been paid for a number of months, although the owners have said they will pay what they owe when production is under way again.
The process of bringing workers back in will give priority to former employees over the age of 45 with responsibility for more than three children.
