Work to start on new tannery in Morocco

04/01/2012
The authorities in Fès have announced that work is about to begin on a promised new tannery in the Aïn Nokbi district of the city. It will replace two existing traditional Fès tanneries, Guerniz Sidi Moussa and Aïn Azliten, which currently operate in the city’s Medina district.

Costing $5 million, the new development will employ 350 workers. The city authorities want to turn
Aïn Nokbi into a centre for leather production and envisage more than 200 artisan leathergoods workshops growing up around the tannery and an exhibition area there. To meet the tannery’s raw material needs, the plan also includes setting up a skins market.

This will be part of a wider investment project into traditional industries.
