New FMD outbreak in Paraguay

04/01/2012
Paraguay's national animal health service, Senacsa, has confirmed a new outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD). The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has been informed.

Like the case that came to light in September 2011 and compromised the impressive development of Paraguay's cattle, beef and tanning industry, the new case of FMD is in the department of San Pedro in the south-east of the country. Livestock farmers and packers in neighbouring Brazil and Argentina have been on high alert since Senacsa first confirmed the disease among Paraguayan cattle.

Senacsa has said it will continue with its programme of measures to stop the spread of the disease.
