India: leather exports up 30% in September
India’s leather exports grew from 30% year-on-year to about $380 million in September, according to the Council for Leather Exports (CLE). The CLE said the increase is due to a rising demand from new markets, including Latin America and the Middle-East.
The CLE said, however, that the demand is weak in western markets like the US and Europe.
Leather garments grew by 55%, footwear components by 36%, leathergoods by 28% and finished leather by 18%.
During the April-September period of 2011-12 fiscal, leather exports grew 27% to $2.3 billion, compared to the same period last fiscal.
The CLE had set an export target of $4 billion.
