The authorities in Brazil have reported official cattle slaughter statistics for the third quarter of 2011.

During the three-month period, Brazilian abattoirs slaughtered almost 7.3 million head of cattle, which represents an increase of 3.1% compared to the second quarter or 2011. Beef industry commentators in Brazil have pointed out that these figures have stopped a run of four consecutive quarters of lower slaughter numbers. However, the figure still represents
a decline of 1.6% compared to the third quarter of 2010.
