The authorities in Saudi Arabia have said that total livestock numbers in the country have declined steadily in the last five years.

In 2006, there were almost 19 million head of livestock in Saudi Arabia but by 2010 this total had fallen to just over 14 million.

A recent report from the country's central bank broke down the 2010 figure as just over 9 million sheep, 3.8 million goats, 810,000 camels and 345,000 cows. It is the figures for sheep and goats that have shown the sharpest decline since 2006, falling by 25% and 32.5% respectively.
