USDA predicts beef export growth for India

In spite of religious sensitivity, India's beef exports could increase by as much as 16% in 2012, according the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), to reach almost 1.3 million tonnes.

USDA has said demand for Indian beef in south-east Asia, the Middle East and North Africa is increasing because it is relatively cheap. Demand from these markets is the main reason for a 62% rise in exports of Indian beef between 2007 and 2011.

It said the amount of beef produced from India's herd of an estimated 300 million head of cattle would still be relatively low, perhaps reaching 3.2 million tonnes in 2012. It compared this with the 2.2 million tonnes it is predicting for Australia next year from a herd size of 28.8 million head.
