Brazil’s official statistics body, the IBGE, has said the country’s industrial output for the month of October 2011 fell by 0.3% compared to October 2010. A decline of 3.5% in the state of São Paulo was the biggest factor in the national fall, the organisation said.

Fifteen of 18 industrial sectors analysed by the IBGE for this exercise showed a fall in output in October compared to 12 months earlier. The decline for
São Paulo’s leather and footwear industry was 12.3%.

At a national level, leather and footwear output for the month was down by 8.6%. Two other states said a decline in leather and footwear affected their overall performance in October. In Ceará, the leather sector fell by 6.3% and in Santa Catarina the decline was even steeper at 18.2%.
