Public body in Algeria to turn tannery waste into fertiliser

13/12/2011
A public-sector body in Algeria called Leather Industry, set up by the government in March 2011 specifically to help the country’s tanneries improve their management of solid waste, is preparing to begin its work.

With a state investment of around EUR 2 million, Leather Industry will take an estimated daily amount of 30 tonnes of solid waste from tanneries across Algeria and convert it into fertiliser, with the technical support of the ministry of agriculture.

As well as helping the environment, he ministry has pointed out that the contribution the operation can make to its supply of fertiliser will be welcome as the North African country’s farmers are consuming an estimated 300,000 tonnes per year.
