New life for Kelian factory in Romans

A project to bring some life back to the once vibrant leather and footwear town of Romans in south-eastern France, has won financial support from the local government.

At its November budget meeting, the department of
Drôme approved a grant of EUR 12,000 for an organisation called the Pôle Cuir de Romans (Romans Leather Hub) association.

This association has begun a project to buy raw materials and move machinery from a recently closed company in Tours to a factory that footwear brand Kelian used to operate in Romans. The project has an overall budget of EUR 120,000, of which the association had raised EUR 70,000 through loans. The grant from the local authorities takes it closer to its total.

With the machinery in place, the hope is that the former Kelian factory will become a workshop for new designers to use to make shoes, garments, leathergoods and other accessories. There is even an idea to launch a footwear collection with
Pôle Cuir de Romans as the brand name.
